Expressions and phrasal verbs with “take”

The English verb “take” has many different meanings and uses. “take” is used in many different expressions and phrasal verbs. In this lesson, you will learn the most common uses and expressions.

Form

“take” is an irregular verb.

base form: take
ing form: taking
past tense: took
past participle: taken

Meaning and uses

= to remove something without permission


I can’t find my phone. I think someone has taken it.

= to move something from one place to another.
= to carry

Please take your bag upstairs.

= to hold

Please take my bag while I open the door.

= to accept

The restaurant takes large groups.

= to go somewhere with someone

They took the children to the park yesterday.

Expressions and phrasal verbs with “take”

“take something off” is a phrasal verb.

It means to remove an item of clothing.

Jane has taken her shoes off.

Since it is a separable phrasal verb, we can also change the word order:

take off something

Jane has taken off her shoes

“take up something“ means to start a new activity or hobby.

Jane has taken up skiing.

Skiing

“take your time“ means to do something slowly. Don’t rush

Take your time eating your dinner.

“take no notice of someone“ = to ignore someone.

They are wrong. Take no notice of them!
